My son, who’s 17, did his very first grocery run all by himself last week. I didn’t feel like going to the store, and quite frankly, I didn’t really need anything, plus I always have enough food in the refrigerator, freezer and pantry that I can always whip something up for supper.
I am big about teaching my kids about life skills, and I wanted to challenge my son. I gave him my debit card and told him he could spend up to $150. He didn’t want me to tell him what to get, and I agreed that he could get whatever he wanted. I only dropped one hint that if he wanted chips with the Sloppy Joes I was making for supper, he might want to get some because we didn’t have any.
Off he went to the store, with my debit card in hand. He chose whatever he wanted to buy, not only for himself, but he also thought of other family members and what they like too. The best part is, he spent less than half of what I told him he could spend. The total bill was $72.13.
Did he need fancy muscle drinks and whip cream in a can? Probably not, but the only rule was he had to stay within the budget.

I think he did pretty darn good, considering the only question heading out the door was, “what if I come back with $150 in Goldfish crackers and those cookies I like”?
