About Jim
Jim Shaw is a veteran journalist, broadcaster, and educator with a distinguished career spanning print, television, radio, and academia. A graduate of the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism, he began reporting for suburban Chicago newspapers and later served as a Washington, D.C. correspondent for multiple radio stations while completing his master’s degree.
Shaw spent more than two decades at WDAY-TV as a reporter and substitute news director, earning numerous honors. He then went on to found the news operation at KVRR-TV, where he served in multiple roles including news director, reporter, assignment editor, and political analyst. Under his leadership, the station earned top recognition for Best Newscast in North Dakota, and he later served a decade as president of the North Dakota Associated Press Broadcasters Association.
In addition to his newsroom work, Shaw taught broadcast journalism for 17 years at Minnesota State University Moorhead, mentoring the next generation of journalists. For the past 12 years, he has been a newspaper columnist for The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, where he has been voted the Red River Valley’s “Best Newspaper Columnist” eight times in nine years.
Shaw is a familiar voice on regional radio, having guest-hosted hundreds of talk shows and appeared as a political panelist on KFGO over more than two decades.
