USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service appoints Lance Honig as Chair of USDA’s Agricultural Statistics Board, as well as the Methodology Division Director. Honig has served in an acting capacity for both roles since November 2023. As the chair, he will lead the preparation and dissemination of market-sensitive agricultural forecasts and estimates.
Honig has a wide range of experience with NASS, including most recently serving as the Crops Branch Chief since 2008. Honig replaces the prior chair, Joe Parsons, who held the position since 2016. Parsons is now the NASS Associate Administrator and is currently Acting Administrator.
Lance Honig grew up on a crop & livestock farm in northeast Kansas. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Kansas State University, he began his career with NASS in 1991 and spent several years in Kansas and Indiana before moving to NASS headquarters in Washington DC to serve as the National Wheat Statistician.
He later served as Deputy Director of the North Dakota Field Office, then returned to Washington, DC to become the Head of the Fruits, Vegetables, and Special Crops Section. He later served as the Head of the Field Crops Section.
