MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO/WCCO) – Officials have released more information about the rescue of a man who fell through the ice on Lake of the Isles in South Minneapolis.
Officers and paramedics were called to the scene Thursday around 7:45 p.m. where they found a 36-year old man about 100 feet from the shore, submerged up to his neck, and yelling for help.
Minneapolis Park Police Chief Jason Ohotto says first responders acted heroically to help the man.
“These are not easy decisions,” Ohotto says. “Do you wait for the fire department to get here and risk this person going under the water to deal with that situation? Maybe that person doesn’t survive. These are split second decisions that our first responders are making. They’re doing it with the mindset of serving their community.”
Once pulled to shore, the man was rushed to the hospital. He is expected to be okay.
Ohotto says he hopes this can serve as a warning that no ice anywhere in Minneapolis is safe.
