“Old Glory”
KFGO radio is home to a lot of things. News, weather, sports, talk shows – but one of the aspects that we, at KFGO, are most proud of is our commitment to Veterans. On air programs that are created specifically for Veterans, covering Veteran related news and our commitment to the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN. Almost every staff member has gone on an Honor Flight as a volunteer. We’ve spent hours talking about the importance of the Honor Flight during our shows – but until you actually go and see how impactful these trips are, you truly can’t know what they mean. When KFGO staff members return home, they instantly want to know how they can help. How they can help spread the word about signing up, how they can help fundraise, how they can help in honor of those who served our country.
It was recently brought to our attention that our co-worker, Don Schatz – a Veteran himself, had been able to secure a flag flown in our nation’s capital during an Honor Flight and offered to let KFGO fly the flag outside of our studios. The answer was, obviously, YES! As our programs and staff set out on Giving Hearts Day 2024 to raise money for the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN, we all could take a moment and watch this incredible flag of the United States of America wave in the wind outside the front door of our building.
On February 8th, Giving Hearts Day, Amy Iler and JJ Gordon told the KFGO listening audience the story of how this flag came to fly in front of the studio. Text messages poured in and included the following:
“I drive by there everyday. Thanks for giving me something to salute as part of my morning.”
“I went on the Honor Flight in 2018, this is a great reminder back home of the trip we took to DC”
“Flags always have a special meaning, thanks for sharing this flag’s story!”
What an honor to do our work under the shadow of this flag. It symbolizes so much. The honor to our Veterans, the pledge to do all we can to ensure it flies high everyday and a great way for KFGO to remind our staff, listeners and guests that our military organizations have done so much and continue to do so much for each and everyone in this great nation of ours.
Thank you Don, your thoughtfulness and presentation of this flag of the United States of America is inspiring. We are fortunate to have such a storied flag flying in front of our building.
