FARGO (KFGO) – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says a North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent fired a handgun at a man wanted on outstanding warrants, who was driving a pickup with stolen license plates last Tues. afternoon.
The bullet narrowly missed 20-year-old Tyler Merritt of Fargo, with the shot going through the fabric of his jacket, in an alley near Carl Ben Eielson Elementary School.
BCI Agent Scott Voeltz fired the shot. A Cass County sheriff’s deputy, assigned to the Metro Street Crimes Unit, fired his taser. Voeltz is a 17-year law enforcement veteran. The member of the street crimes unit works undercover and his identity will not be released.
The BCA says some of the responding officers were wearing body cameras and the footage will be reviewed. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will give its findings to the Cass County State’s Attorneys Office to determine whether the use of force by the two officers was justified.
