ST. PAUL, Minn. – It’s “Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend” in Minnesota Sat through Monday, but DNR officials are asking anglers to use extreme caution.
Benji Kohn with the DNR says as of now, he wouldn’t venture out on any ice from St. Cloud and south. He says some northern lakes have finally frozen in, but even in that part of the state, he advises people to call an area resort and double-check where the ice is safe.
Kohn says if you do venture out, wear a life jacket, or float coat, bring proper safety gear including ice picks, and never go out alone, and be sure to let someone know about your trip plans and expected return time.
