FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) – With snow falling and the wind blowing, people gathered at the Fargo National Cemetery for an unclaimed veteran’s burial.
Merle Schrank was buried with full military honors while numerous veterans and community members made their way out there and braved the elements.
“I am always in shock to see so many people come out for unclaimed veterans, especially on these cold, chilly North Dakota weather days,” Jennifer Lieder, the manager at the Fargo National Cemetery, said. “But then I think, ‘well this community is pretty awesome and I shouldn’t be too surprised.’”
Schrank had no family, but people showed up to honor him.
“Just having people show up from the community say farewell and be part of the family for this veteran. It’s just such an honor to be part of,” Lieder said.
Schrank died on Dec. 8 at the VA Hospital in Fargo.
