CASSELTON, N.D. (KFGO/KVRR) – Google’s Online Safety Roadshow was in Casselton Friday to give a Be Internet Awesome presentation.
Dan Harbeke, Google’s regional Head of Public Policy and External Affairs, said the Be Internet Awesome curriculum was developed in conjunction with teachers over the past couple of years to teach kids to be smart and safe online. He said they also talk to kids about sharing content with care.
“If they ever have an issue, [they should] talk with a trusted adult and make sure we’re just as kind in person, it’s equally important to be kind online.” Harbeke said.
Google also discussed mental effects of the internet, like how much screen time people consume, and how the content they consume makes them feel both while they are watching and after they turn the device off.
Harbeke said with technology being more incorporated into people’s everyday lives, the presentation becomes more important each year.
“I think about when I was growing up, when I was their age, online was a new thing. It’s not so new anymore,” Harbeke said. “We’re all online more and more. So, having that digital literacy at this age is only becoming more important.”
