There are many things I can criticize Senator Kevin Cramer for, but the tragic action of his son, Ian, isnโt one of them. Ian struggles with mental disorders. It isnโt his parentsโ fault that he stole their car and caused the devastating death of Mercer County Deputy, Paul Martin. Some might argue it isnโt anyoneโs fault. Ian is sick, and the difference between his sickness and others like him, is that we arenโt dedicated to treating it.
I have no doubt that many have learned to live with it. But not all of us have committed to helping with it. The subject alone makes some individuals think of people in their lives they wish werenโt there. People that didnโt make themselves who they are.
So, what good could come out of something this tragic? Thatโs where it does become Kevin Cramerโs responsibility. The Senator is one of a hundred people in this country that sit in a room and have an opportunity to advance the help for those struggling with their mental health. And Iโm not just talking about throwing money at the issue. Iโm talking about speaking to those in similar situations and making it a priority to find ways to help.
It also is an opportunity to understand the addictions other parentโs sons have. He can promise himself, and others, to never use any of those situations as a tool for political gain. Itโs an opportunity for kindness and understanding.
And itโs a time to get something done.
Good riding with you,
Joel
