BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO/AP) – The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating after a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed by Bismarck Police during a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Kirkwood Mall in the capital city early Sunday.
Police had been investigating Nicholas Bruington of Bismarck for reportedly shooting at another teenager earlier. Police responded about 12:15 a.m. Sunday to reports of gunfire in the area and officers determined a shooting occurred near a hotel. At about 1:50 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle in which Bruington was a passenger, near the Scheels sporting goods store in the mall lot. A police statement said Bruington “had a firearm and did not follow commands.”
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Bruington pointed the gun at police. Three officers shot at Bruington. None of the officers were injured. Life-saving procedures were performed by officers at the scene until Bruington was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
All three officers who were involved in the incident have been put on administrative leave during the investigation. The shooting happened just six weeks after officers of the BPD started wearing body cameras, and Attorney General Drew Wrigley confirmed Monday that the BCI was in possession of that footage and evaluating it as part of the investigation.
The officers who were involved in the shooting have not yet been identified.
