What I’ve learned about myself from living in Trumpworld.
1) I’m more patriotic than I ever suspected. I was raised to be respectful of the flag, our veterans, and Democracy. I’m always ready for a rousing political argument but never thought of myself as anything more than a good American because of it. I’ve always been a bit of a rebel. That’s American.
This president of ours has made me more appreciative of our form of government. Although flawed, somehow our system has produced a certain level of security and, for some, freedom. As long as I remember, America was great. Not so much now.
He hates the free press. ‘Nuff said.
This president has great disdain for the whole legal system, from the enforcers, to the lawyers and lawmakers. The police, the judges, the courts and even the laws themselves are targets for his vitriol.
He doesn’t seem to care for “The American Way” at all. He dislikes all branches of government except the executive, (and, he doesn’t respect that.) He doesn’t care about America or the Constitution or law, and, he doesn’t care even a little about us!
This is not the America I knew.
2) I’m more religious than I imagined. I’ve come to the conclusion that “The Gospel(s)” have many tenets by which to live. Don’t get me wrong though. I’m a big believer in the separation of church and state. I say we should do religion in church, not in the House and Senate. Of late, I’m dismayed by the Evangelicals for their tolerance of Trump’s behavior. But, that’s me. I was raised Mormon but haven’t been on “the roles” for decades. I’ve read the Bible, Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants. (The latter four are Mormon books.)
Since the election of Donald Trump, I’m reminded daily, that Jesus had many nuggets by which one should live.
“Turn the Other Cheek,” Matthew 5:39
“Let he that is without sin, cast the first stone.” John 8:7
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Matthew 7:12
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth.” Matthew 5:5
“Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers” Garth Brooks 1991 (Just checking to see if you’re still reading.)
So, allow me to sign off with a good old fashioned “God Bless America” and AMEN!
