GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KFGO/KNOX) – A former UND student with ties to Thompson and Grand Forks was back on campus Tuesday, talking about the future of artificial intelligence in society.
Greg Brockman is co-founder and president of OpenAI, a research and deployment company with a mission to ensure general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits for all of humanity.
“You cannot talk about the benefits without talking about the risks,” Brockman said. “You cannot talk about all the wonderful things it will do without also thinking about, ‘But what about in the wrong hands? What about if everyone’s doing this thing in this particular way?’ And so I think the truth is that we as a society need to pick. We need to think about how we want to navigate through this.”
Brockman is co-creator of ChatGPT, one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer apps, which secured 1 million users in the five days after its launch.
Brockman was interviewed by UND President Andrew Armacost, who heads the North Dakota University System’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force.
That task force was formed to create strategies to navigate through potential impacts of A-I in higher education.
