FARGO (KFGO) – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is welcoming 20 new citizens before Thursday’s Redhawks game against the Sioux City Explorers.
Citizenship and Immigration Services field office director Trina Swanson said it takes an average of seven years to become naturalized, and everyone has a different path to citizenship.
“People come into the United States in various ways – through family or work, but it definitely is a choice,” Swanson said. “You can continue to live on your green card if you want, but these folks chose to become Americans.”
Swanson said, to become new citizens, everybody must take a speaking, reading, and writing English test and a Civics test.
The citizenship candidates being sworn in by Judge Alice Senechal come from 14 different countries including Angola, Canada, Cuba, Ghana, India, Kenya, Liberia, Mauritania, Mexico, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and Zimbabwe.
Swanson said there are over nine million people eligible to become new Americans.
The ceremony starts at 6:45 p.m.
