ROBBINSDALE, Minn. (WCCO/KFGO) – Police are calling a deadly crash in Robbinsdale a tragedy after they say a speeding driver crashed into a minivan, killing a 34-year-old woman and critically injuring her husband.
Police say the speeding driver was a 20-year-old Minneapolis man who was trying to avoid a ticket.
According to Robbinsdale police, an officer spotted a car going 55 mph in a 30 mph zone of 42nd Avenue North near Highway 100 at 8:15 p.m. Saturday night. The officer followed the car, eventually turning on lights and sirens. The driver fled and the officer ended the chase just blocks away from the crash.
“The suspect vehicle crossed 36th Avenue North at a very high rate of speed, striking a vehicle traveling on 36th,” Capt. John Elder said.
Police said the suspect was going between 70 and 90 mph when he crashed into the minivan. The woman who was driving that minivan was killed. Her husband, who was a passenger in the minivan, remains hospitalized.
The suspect, who is expected to survive the crash, will be held on probable cause charges of criminal vehicular operation when he is released from the hospital.
