Let’s take a look back at some newspaper stories from 100 years ago, June 21st 1919!
In this day and age could you image telling the world “There’s a ship full of gold sailing from New York to South America. We’ll they did in the Oklahoma City Times. I’m not a math expert but the price of gold in 1919 averaged $19.95 an ounce. June 20th 2019’s close was $1,410.70 an ounce. At nearly 47,000 pounds of gold…that shipment on today’s market would have been roughly $1,060,676,691. (Give or take)
Here’s a couple of tidbits I found in the Topeka Daily State Journal that are in the “Believe it or Not” category!
This was in the New York Sun, but delayed two days because of the story coming from around the Atlantic. Tough to believe this happened.
And in the Bismarck Tribune, before they had a league of their own during World War II, there were women playing baseball in 1919!
