I’ve been gone for a few days but I did want to chat a second about Kmart.
I’ve lived in the FM area for most of my life. From time to time we would do a little
shopping at the Kmart store on South University drive in Fargo.
Mom might need some new dish towels, or maybe some cards for
upcoming weddings, birthday, anniversaries, etc. etc. Of course as kids we
often wandered into the toy department and made some pleas for something new
for the toy box. Most of the time it was no, but I remember being able to get a
packet of “play” money. It even had a $100,000 bill in it. That was pretty cool
to show off even though it wasn’t real.
If we had been busy and mom had no time to cook, why off to
that Kmart we’d go because at that time they had a “deli” and she’d buy us sub
sandwiches. Deli’s been gone a long, long time.
Do you remember the “Blue Light” specials? They would roll
out that little cart and with a flip of a switch they’d turn on that flashing
blue light, so the whole store could see where the announced special was
happening. Often times the special would be on for only a few minutes and there
was someone there with a “marker” gun to put on the sale price. Now…..a piece
of blue paper and the item is on sale for days.
The South U. Kmart will close in December but for a lot of
longtime residents of the area some good memories will remain.
