ROCHESTER, Minn. – Mayo Clinic officials on Monday unveiled billion-dollar plans to expand its downtown Rochester campus, after threatening last month to send projects to other states unless lawmakers dropped plans for committees including nurses to determine staffing levels at Minnesota hospitals.
Lawmakers agreed to exempt Mayo and ultimately dropped the provision entirely, to the dismay of nurses’ union leaders and some legislators.
Mayo’s preliminary map for the downtown Rochester expansion includes a clinic complex connecting to the western side of the well-known Gonda and Mayo Buildings.
Doctor Craig Daniels, physician lead for the expansion said, “We must continue transforming healthcare to fulfill our obligation to our patients, support our staff and ensure we continue to make the Mayo Clinic we inherited better for the next generation.”
Work could begin next year and extend into 2030.
