FARGO (KFGO) – The Girl Scouts Dakota Horizon’s Savannah Cup Derby is in its second year and runs Saturday at Matt’s Automotive in Fargo.
The event is open to the public, anyone, any age, and will feature pinewood derby races, food, games, vendors, music and more.
“Savannah is the place where Girl Scouts started and that’s why we came up with the name,” Jennifer Jamieson with Dakota Horizon said. “It’s an idea of the kids come, they build cars, and we see who wins.”
Matt Lachowitzer is the owner of Matt’s Automotive. He said they will have STEM-style events like a tire-changing competition, a station where they will learn how to jump start a car, and one where they learn about different components of a car.
Belle is a Girl Scout who competed in the Savannah Cup last year and said anyone can come out.
“It’s really fun and you can bring your whole family to it,” Belle said. “You don’t have to think, ‘only girls can do it,’ because all people can.”
The event begins at noon. Registration is $10 for people needing a derby car kit, or $5 for those who have their own car.
Races run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m at Matt’s Automotive at 1150 43 1/2 St. South in Fargo.
