MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO) – A man accused of stealing a pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the “Wizard of Oz” has been charged in federal court.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Terry Martin is charged with theft of major artwork for theft of an object of cultural heritage from a museum.
Martin is accused of stealing the slippers, one of four remaining pairs, from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 2005. When the slippers were stolen, they were insured for $1 million, but the Attorney’s Office said they are now valued at $3.5 million.
The FBI and Grand Rapids Police Department recovered the slippers in July of 2018.
A U.S. Attorney’s Office from North Dakota will prosecute the case. The spokesman from the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Martin’s first Appearance will be in a few weeks.
