BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – On a vote of 52-41, the North Dakota House failed to override Gov. Doug Burgum’s veto of a bill that would have provided $10 million in state money to help parents cover the cost of sending their children to private schools.
The House needed 63 votes, a two-thirds majority, to override the veto.
Burgum vetoed the legislation last Friday saying it lacked transparency and accountability standards.
Under the bill, a family of four making up to $150,000 a year could qualify for tuition reimbursement.
Bill co-sponsor Republican Rep. Mike Lefor criticized Burgum’s decision.
“With federal and state funds, we’re supporting our public schools to the tune of $2.6 billion,” Lefor said. “That’s admirable. We’re asking for $10 million for 7,500 students. This ask does not take one dollar from the public school system, as some would have us believe.”
