ST. PAUL, Minn. – As part of a controversial measure included in an environment budget bill the state House passed Monday, there would be no open hunting season on wolves in Minnesota, even if current federal protections were to be removed.
Maplewood Democrat Peter Fischer said wolf hunting is not justified by science, ethics or Minnesota values.
“Wolves self-regulate their own populations, and killing them will not reduce already-rare conflicts with livestock or growed deer herds,” Fischer said.
Republican Kurt Daudt from Crown warns that if the wolf population is not managed, the animal will expand its range and become more aggressive toward pets, and potentially people.
“If they’re in my district, which I can drive to in one hour… that’s how close wolves are to this Capitol,” Daudt said.
