Take a deep breath…now is not the time to panic or worry that giant wasps are going to start attacking us as we finally venture outside. In fact, our guest – Alex Knudson – shares some great insight into these “Murder Hornets” and even gives us a better name. We’ll refer to them as the Asian Giant Hornet.
These giant hornets come from Asia where they can be found on the main continent as well as the island of Japan. Learning of a colony in the United States is extremely uncommon, but not doom and gloom. For starters, these insects aren’t going to hunt you down just to sting you. Like any hornet, they will attack if provoke. For example, these Asian Giant Hornets could live in a rotting log. Flip over the log and you will have some problems.
These large insects are apex predators. They thrive on invading the hives of honey bees and eating the heads of their prey. Still – we are saying, take a breath. They most likely entered the United States through Canada and into Canada through shipping containers with goods being imported.
The Washington State Department of Agriculture has been taking the capture and elimination of these hornets very seriously and are keeping tabs on hot spots.
