DULUTH, Minn. โ A Duluth officer fatally shot a 34-year-old man Friday afternoon in an alley in the Endion neighborhood east of downtown.
Police Chief Mike Ceynowa said officers were attempting an arrest for felony threats of violence and tried to de-escalate verbally, and with a taser and 40mm โsponge rounds.โ
โAfter failed de-escalation attempts, the male charged a responding officer with the knife,โ Ceynowa said. โOne officer fired their duty-issued handgun.โ
Ceynowa said officers immediately rendered aid and called an ambulance, but the man died later at the hospital.
The incident was captured on body-cam video, which Ceynowa said will be released at some point when it doesnโt interfere with the investigation.
โOur thoughts and prayers are with this individualโs family, his loved ones, his friends, as well as our officers and their families,โ Ceynowa said.
