This is the last time I’m going to get a chance to write to you through this column in 2022. That means it’s a good time to look back at our discussions, and look forward to what they might look like in 2023. Hopefully conversations where we aren’t afraid to disagree, but rather afraid of how we may act if we do.
In looking back, it’s clear Donald Trump was a huge topic of conversation. Some might say it was because it makes for better radio ratings and more clicks on a blog. While that may be true, that’s not why we did it. We talked a lot about Donald Trump because he wanted us to. And with his recent announcement to run for President again, I have no doubt it’ll continue into our 2023 discussions.
2023 will be a make-it-or-break-it year for Donald Trump. Will he build a foundation that goes beyond the 60% of all Republicans in the Nation, or is that enough to make sure he remains the voice and face of the Republican Party? The only thing I do know is that his race will put our democracy at risk once again. It will place power in the hands of men and women that will use any means necessary to get Trump in office. And that alone will cause further conversation.
We also talked quite a bit about President Joe Biden. The successes he has achieved and the failures that need more attention. To be able to pass more bi-partisan legislation than most previous presidents is amazing. Especially at a time where our Country is as divided as it is. It’s historic how he’s invested in infrastructure and common-sense gun legislation, while at the same time stopping a deep recession and funding a foreign country in its’ war efforts. But that doesn’t change the fact that there are still problems at our southern border, as well as looking at the fact that Biden will be closer to 82 than 81 when the next election comes around.
I’m sure we’ll have conversations wondering how the hell Marjorie Taylor Greene became so powerful, and how we’ll pass any legislation with such a split government.
I’d also be willing to wager that part of our debate will be around an activist Supreme Court, and how their personal values have been forced upon a Nation that has long-since moved on. With Justices like Alito and Thomas now holding the power, we’ll soon be talking about term limits.
But all that can wait, as there will be plenty of time.
Happy New Year everyone,
Joel
