You have to be careful about what you talk about on the radio…you never know who might be listening.
Recently, Amy Iler and I were talking about funny Christmas gifts and I mentioned a present that had been re-gifted over and over in my family.
We called it the “ugly plate” and it was a blown glass plate that has a big dip in the middle. Here is the thing…its hard to tell if it should face up and you put crackers around the mound in the middle or it should be depression down and acts like a wobbly piece of art. You just can’t tell. And no one in my family has come up with a good answer in over 40 years.
As the story goes, it was purchased at the Shady Hallow Flea Market and given to my Grandpa, Johnny Gordon. He accepted and they had to fight back laughter as his expression showed how bewildering this thing was. He then gifted it to another family member and history was made.
At a very special gathering, shortly before my father passed away, it was gifted to my grandmother’s side of the family. It has been bouncing around there for nearly 20 years…until I happened to mention it on It Takes Two with Amy & JJ.
I walked into my office and in a gift bag, wrapped with a bow, inside a box from a beef wholesaler…was THE UGLY PLATE. Also included was the letter below and a push to start getting it onto the Gordon side again.
Challenge accepted! I will make sure it finds a new home by 2023.
Thank you for the letter, the plate and the memories. Who would have thought that a practical joke could bring decades of laughter?!?! An item that seemed to not have a purpose turns out to have a bigger purpose than anyone could have imagined.
