Retired Horticulturalist Dave Decock gives KFGO listeners a chance to call in about their gardening questions. They don’t call him the Lord of the Lawn or the Prince of Pruning for nothing!

IN THIS EPISODE:
Dave takes a lot of phone calls and texts – covering a lot of topics! Here are some highlights from this week’s episode.
Sap Suckers – Having trouble with these birds damaging your trees? They leave small holes, commonly clustered together. Dave’s advice is to get some burlap and wrap it loosely around the tree where the holes are clustered and secure it with some twine. Leave some length on the twine to flap in the wind. This should keep them from looking for the established wounds and the flapping twine will also deter them from swooping around.
Willows Near the Beach – Asked about the roots in constantly wet soil (the type near a lake), Dave doesn’t see any major problem but it can reek havoc on your sandy beaches as the root structure extends. Mostly, willows like that loose and wet soil type.
Weed Killing 101 – A listener is plagued with a large collection of thistle bushes. He asks if now is a good time to spray them with poison. They are all dried out and haven’t started to grow this year. Dave warns that spraying a weed that hasn’t leafed out or actively growing doesn’t do much good. The poison is brought into the plant by the leaves and the growth process. Avoid wasting time and money. Unless you are working with a pre-emergent style weed killer. Pro-tip, pull the weeds, knowing they will probably come up again, and carefully spray the small growth when it starts.
All of this and so much more in this episode of Plant Talk with Dave Decock. Brought to you through the KFGO airwaves and in podcast form by Dave’s West Fargo Tire & Service as well as Thompson Greenery.
