DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (KFGO) – Devils Lake Police say scammers spoofing the phone number of the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center and using the name of a purported DLPD member may be targeting the Fargo area with a gift card scam.
Police say they received more than half a dozen calls from Fargo area residents Monday about getting a call from someone using the name “Sergeant Toso” with Devils Lake police.
The impersonator attempting the scam claims the person answering the phone has a warrant and needs to pay fines or fees over the phone via gift card. Police are reminding residents that law enforcement officers are not going to call seeking a payment over the phone.
Authorities also say that anytime a gift card is mentioned as an acceptable form of payment it is a tell tale sign of a scam.
