COLFAX, N.D. (KFGO) – An 11-year-old boy who went missing late last night in Richland County was found safe this morning following a wide scale, multi-agency search by ground and air.
Chief Deputy Gary Ruhl says the boy left home after a disagreement with family. Shortly before midnight, he was reported biking north in the southbound lane of I-29 near Colfax. The boy ditched his bike off County Road 4 and was seen entering a cornfield. After deputies could not immediately locate the boy, they called in additional county law enforcement including a K9 and set up a perimeter. Highway Patrol joined the search with another K9, as well as West Fargo Police with a thermal imaging drone, and the Abercrombie, Colfax, and Walcott fire departments.
Ruhl says the search was called off after about four hours with deputies remaining stationed along the perimeter. At 6:45am Ruhl sent out a missing person alert to surrounding communities for residents to check their buildings and property. A short time later the boy’s father called to say the boy had found his way home sometime in the early morning hours and was discovered hiding in a trailer his home’s garage. Ruhl said he spoke with the boy, who was cold but otherwise in good condition. Ruhl said the boy promised him he would never do that again.
