BELTRAMI COUNTY, Minn. (KFGO) – There was a dramatic rescue of horses stuck in a swamp over the weekend near Turtle River in Minnesota.
A 911 call came into the Beltrami County Sheriff just after 4pm Saturday from riders in Three Island County Park, where some of the trails are flooded. When their horses started sinking into the mud, they spooked and ran further into the bog, where they stopped and sank down far enough that they could not move.
Using a tracked utility vehicle to reach the stranded riders and horses and plywood boards from the Bemidji Fire Department, county deputies, a MN DNR conservation officer, and a state trooper were able to create a floating bridge for the horses to walk on. They “leap frogged” the plywood sheets for approximately a quarter mile until the ground was solid enough for the horses to walk on.
The riders and horses made it back to the trailhead parking lot about four hours later.
