FARGO/MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Flood control projects continue within Fargo and Moorhead. It involves levees, floodwalls, and other infrastructure along the Red River. That has required flood buyouts which started following the record 2009 flood.
Fargo City Division Engineer Nathan Boerboom said buyouts have slowed but will continue into this year. Since 2009, the city has completed 259 full property acquisitions.
Boerboom said the city is authorized to complete three additional buyouts. Two are in the Belmont Park neighborhood and another home south of 32nd Avenue South along Harwood Drive. To date, the acquisitions have cost more than $90 million.
Bob Zimmerman, Moorhead’s city engineer, said Moorhead has acquired 276 properties along the riverfront since 2009. He said there is still has approximately 25 properties that are eligible for buyouts. He said most of the focus on flood protection is now on remaining infrastructure projects, including levees.
Zimmerman said the acquisitions have cost about $116 million. About $83-million of that cost has come from the state of Minnesota.
The floodwalls, levees, and other protection measures in Fargo and Moorhead are part of the FM Area Diversion Project, expected to be completed in 2027.
