BISMARCK, ND – Around 8:30 Thursday morning, the Bismarck Fire Department was dispatched to a smoking green substance on the roadway in the 2400 block of Centennial Road.
The first arriving fire crew established command and confirmed that there was a substance on the road. Alongside the substance was a broken one-gallon plastic container.
Additional resources responded to the scene, which included another fire engine, Special Operations Hazardous Materials apparatus, and a Command vehicle.
The crews conducted air monitoring and sampling and verified it was acid on the roadway. The acid was neutralized with an agent and removed from the road.
As the neutralized acid was being removed on Centennial Road, the Bismarck Fire Department was dispatched to the 2900 block of Broadway Ave for what appeared to be a smoking milk jug on the road.
The first arriving fire crew established command and confirmed that there was a substance on the road. Alongside the substance was a broken one-gallon plastic container. The Special Operations Hazardous Materials apparatus and one engine crew from Centennial road also responded to Broadway Ave. The crews utilized the same tactics, as on Centennial Road, and mitigated the spill.
Combined, five fire department apparatus and 13 personnel responded to both scenes. Public Works assisted by sending a street sweeper once the acid had been washed away.
There were no injuries to first responders or the public.
