Plant Talk with Dave Decock is the longest running program on KFGO! Another year has arrived and listeners are sending in their questions about lawns, pests, trees, shrubs, house plants and more. Retired horticulturalist Dave Decock can solve your problems. He is the Prince of Pruning, the Lord of Lawns – well, you get the idea!
IN THIS EPISODE:
Dave talks a lot about pests. Some serious yard damage from voles begs the question of how to get rid of these buggers. Dave mentions that traditional poison can make for less than happy neighbors when someone’s pet gets into the trap. Instead, using a repellant is suggested. Hitting up a farm supply store or a nursery is your best bet. It might be a bit of a chore and take a season, but the damage can cost a lot more than spending a few hours in the backyard!
Another listener describes half the size of a pencil eraser holes in the side of his evergreen. Sapsuckers are likely the answer. Dave has some ideas and tips to keep these insects from destroying your tree. It’s a sticky job, but worth the effort.
Easter Lillies are also around the corner. Plant Talk has suggestions on getting the best possible lily and having them ready to transplant outside.
Don’t forget! Grab a bucket’s worth of snow left in your yard. Using this water to wash through your house plants will help keep them thriving. Household water contains a large amount of salt. This wash through in the spring is like a breath of fresh air!
