DULUTH, Minn. – The Duluth Seaway Port Authority is reporting a 27-percent increase in maritime tonnage for the 2021 season.
The Port of Duluth-Superior rebounded nicely from pandemic lows in 2020 with 32-point-nine million short tons last year. Iron ore led the upswing. Officials say the total taconite float topped 20 million tons for the second time in four seasons. Grain is the port’s top export, but it dropped to an 85-year low of just over 808-thousand short tons last season.
Total overall tonnage for the whole Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System rose one percent in 2021.
