VALLEY CITY, N.D. (KFGO) – An early-morning fire that gutted a home in Valley City, N.D. over the weekend has left one person dead.
Fire Chief Scott Magnuson said the blaze was reported around 3:30 a.m. Sunday at 925 2nd Street Southeast.
After the blaze was extinguished, officers determined that one person was unaccounted for and conducted an extensive search. An occupant of the home was found in the lower level. The remains have been sent to the UND Forensic Pathology Department for Autopsy.
The Valley City Police Department and Valley City Fire Department found a large amount of fire and smoke upon their arrival, preventing VCPD from entering the home to search for residents.
VCFD was able to extinguish the fire but the home is a total loss. Firefighters remained on the scene for more than 14 hours putting out hot spots.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
