FARGO (KFGO) – Fargo gun dealer Jeff Mack says that after 13 years in the business, he’s never seen anything like it.
“Gun sales have been skyrocketing” Mack said. “Through the manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers, it’s even hard to get a lot of the guns to sell now.”
Mack is the owner of Mack Tactical Custom Firearms and Gunsmithing in south Fargo. Mack tells KFGO News that the number of guns he sold over the past two weeks has jumped 50-60%. Mack says he’s selling more guns of all types, ranging from small handguns to AR-15 rifles.
Mack says more customers are buying guns because they’re concerned that the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects will lead to fewer jobs, a damaged economy and a rise in crime.
“That’s their main concern. Are people who are out of work going to be starting to loot or break into homes to get things they need? From what people are hearing on the news and everything and what’s going on around the country in all these bigger cities, they’re starting to wonder ‘can that happen here?’ ”
“Ever since this pandemic started, it seems that people want to protect themselves from more than just the virus. They want to protect themselves and their families and their homes. I think there’s a fear running around that they have to be vigilant” Mack said.
Across the nation, the FBI says it processed more than 5.5 million background checks on gun purchases in January and February.
