Men’s Basketball
DICKINSON, N.D.– Mason Walters poured in 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds to propel the University of Jamestown men’s basketball team to a 93-69 season-opening win Thursday night at Dickinson State University.
Jamestown got off to a blazing start, opening up a 20-7 lead following a two-pointer by Will Cordes at the 12:49 mark. The Jimmies led at the half 46-30.
The Blue Hawks would battle back, though, scoring eight unanswered points over the next 1:08 to reduce their deficit to single digits.
Jamestown then responded with a 7-0 run and would later go on a 18-5 run that put the Jimmies firmly in control. Jamestown shot over 57% from the field in the second half and connected on 12 of 24 three-point attempts.
Cordes and Marc Kjos each scored 13 points, and Devon Schultz had contributed 11 points and stellar defense, blocking six shots. Cole Woodford netted nine points while John Argue recorded six points and seven rebounds.
Bryce Knox paced the Blue Hawks with 14 points, followed by John Evans with 13 and Ajdin Toskic with 12.
Women’s Basketball
DICKINSON, N.D.– The duo of Hannah DeMars and Kia Tower combined for 38 points as the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a 65-58 triumph over Dickinson State University Thursday night. DeMars secured a team-high eight rebounds and Towers dropped six dimes.
It was a close affair at halftime with the Jimmies leading 34-34, but they played phenomenal defense in the third quarter, holding the Blue Hawks to just three points. DSU connected on just one of 15 shots in the third quarter and the Jamestown pressured them into six turnovers.
Jamestown held an insurmountable 17-point lead with under three minutes left, but Dickinson State wound up scoring 11 of the game’s last 12 points to make the final margin a somewhat deceiving seven points.
The Jimmies relied on balanced scoring from their other starters and reserves. Madelyn Schmidt scored five points off the bench while Noelle Josephson, Jailyn Martinson, Megan Oswald, and Audrey Rodakowski, all finished with four. Macy Savela and Jordynn Toliver added three points each.
Kailyn Groves led the Blue Hawks with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Courtney Olson with 15.
