Kim Potter (Hennepin Co. Sheriff)
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. – The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office is asking for the possibility of a tougher sentence in the trial of former Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter.
She’s charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter in the April shooting death of Daunte Wright. In a court filing Friday, prosecutors said they will seek an upward sentencing departure from state guidelines. They argue that Potter’s conduct “caused a greater-than-normal danger to the safety of other people” and she “abused her position of authority.” The maximum sentence for first-degree manslaughter is 15 years.
Potter’s attorneys claim she accidentally fired her gun at Wright instead of her Taser during the traffic stop.
The trial starts November 30th.
