BISMARCK (KFGO Prairie Public Radio) – The public service commission has approved the settlement of an electric rate increase request brought by Xcel Energy in North Dakota.
The commission and Xcel have agreed to a 3.4 % rate increase, much less than the 10.8 % rate jump that the utility originally asked for.
Commissioner Brian Kroshus says he thinks it’s a good balance. He says the company needs to maintain reliable service.
Xcel was granted an interim rate increase that was lower than the final number and most residential customers will see an average refund of about $26.
The new rate will take effect in October.
