Henry Sibley (MN State Historical Society)
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – School board members in Independent School District 197 have voted to change the name of Henry Sibley High School. Approval was given at a Monday meeting.
The school was named after Minnesota’s first governor, but it will be renamed Two Rivers High School. The new name is inspired in part by the high school’s proximity to the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers.
Some school district residents had requested the change due to the way Sibley treated the Dakota people in the 19th Century. He was criticized for his role in the U-S-Dakota War in 1862.
