FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) โ Fargo city commissioners approved acceptance of a federal grant for $2.4 million to build a pedestrian bridge that will run above 2nd Street between City Hall and the floodwall. The bridge will provide access to walking and bike trails along the Red River. The project is an 80/20 split. The local share is $600,000.
The city will now seek a company for a design and eventual construction. The price tag will come into play and could cost more than the $3 million now available and where that additional cost might come from.
City Planning Director Nichole Crutchfield says that could range anywhere from $3-million to $11-million but those decisions will be made by city leaders and the public.
City Commissioner Tony Gehrig was the only โnoโ vote. He says, โWe are going to spend it on a bridge that no one needs.โ He says the money is better spent on โfixing potholes and bridges that are literally falling apart.โ
The pedestrian bridge has been studied for many years. The project is slated for construction in 2023.
