Tal the Orangutan
WAHPETON, ND. (KFGO) – Tal the Orangutan is a resident at the Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton. He has been picking teams in the Super Bowl since 2011.
Every year, the zoo paints the logos of the super bowl teams on footballs and puts them in his enclosure. He makes his pick every year and has been pretty successful. He chose Tampa Bay to win this year.
“I gotta say, up until a few years ago he was doing really well. His success rate was like 97%. Now he’s down to about 80%. It’s one of his many enrichments and of course, they share 97% of our DNA. He’s highly intelligent”. Chahinkapa Zoo Director, Kathy Diekman.
Diekman says the zoo had a successful 2020 season, despite the pandemic. She said, “We put safety guidelines in place in 2020, and will keep them in the 2021 season. People felt safe coming to the outside facility. We got to see the smiles on people’s faces and when they left we heard ‘Oh my gosh, for like 2 hours I forgot we were in a pandemic’.
Weather permitting, Chahinkapa Zoo will open on April 24th.
