Thousands of students rallied across the nation to mark the one-month anniversary of the massacre that killed 17 people at a Florida high school.
Both Fargo North & South had afternoon walk-outs. While Moorhead marked the anniversary at 10:00am.
Here are some photos from the demonstration at Fargo South around 1pm:
One sign in the middle of the crowd said “HOLD HANDS NOT GUNS” and on the other side had all the names of the Stoneman Douglas school shooting victims.
From KFGO News in Moorhead, MN:
In Moorhead, high school students packed the gymnasium and held up posters with the names and photos of the Florida victims. Organizer Luke Seidel says he hopes someone pays attention and tries to make schools safer.
“We’re trying to memorialize the victims and bring attention back to the story” Seidel said. “There hasn’t been substantial change, and we need that.” Seidel added “There’s all these different things that need to take place. Increasing the security, bolstering it at our school, mental health and common-sense gun control.”
Seidel says he does not favor a proposal that would arm teachers. “Fighting fire with fire; everyone gets burned” Seidel said. He says he does support armed school resource officers.
The students also signed letters addressed to Minnesota’s Congressional Delegation.Walkouts were scheduled across the nation at schools ranging from the elementary level to the college level.
