Looking for something to watch over the weekend? Good news: JJ Gordon tells you what to see, stream & skip!
(Well, actually, he had more “see’s” and no “skip’s”)
See It
I Can Only Imagine – playing at Marcus Theaters. The inspiring and unknown true story behind MercyMe’s beloved, chart topping song that brings ultimate hope to so many is a gripping reminder of the power of true forgiveness. Performances from J. Michael Finley, Dennis Quaid, Trace Adkins and the always wonderful Cloris Leachman. 98% of audiences liked it, the critics are scoring it above 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.com. It’s a faith based movie that relies on inspiration rather than preaching to stay with audiences. Country music fans will also dig this flick.
Stream It
Benji – Netflix has purchased the rights to the greatest dog star of all time and put together a brand new chapter in the Benji storybook. We live in a world where the term rescue dog is a part of everyday language – and this new Benji story reflects that. The pint sized pooch packs a punch when it comes to laughs, absolute terror and anxiety when you think he is in trouble plus all the heart warming, ugly crying and sobbing embraces. If you like animals, if you like the Benji from the 70s – heck, if you have a heart – give this one a try.
Skip It
No skip it this week
– instead, I am recommending TWO movies that are getting some special screenings in the FM area. On Sunday, West Acres Cinema will be hosting two classics. At noon, you can see Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on the big screen for only $5. If it’s been awhile since you last watched Ferris, aka Abe Froman – the sausage king of Chicago – experience a dream skip day, check if out on the big screen. Excellent opportunity to expose younger generations to this 80’s comedy classic as well! Remember what Rose the Receptionist said, “He’s one righteous dude.” At 2pm, the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Vertigo gets a Turner Classic Movies re-release. They cleaned up the original print, the sound is in a modern Dolby mix and the story is just as thrilling as it was 60 years ago. Those unfamiliar with the story line – Set in San Francisco, the film creates a dizzying web of mistaken identity, passion and murder after an acrophobic detective (James Stewart) rescues a mysterious blonde (Kim Novak) from the bay and must unravel the secrets of the past to find the key to his future.
