New West Fargo Asst. Principal Invents Budget-Friendly School Safety Feature
Dr. Kelly Peters is the Incoming Assistant Principal at West Fargo High School and brings a lot of education experience – and school safety experience! He has created a door lock to change how we keep classrooms safe – with no disruption!
He and Pat Compton have created and designed the ”
Easy Lock Stop
” which can secure your door in just seconds.
In many classrooms across the United States, the easiest way to deter an intruder is to keep the classroom door locked. In theory, this practice sounds easy, but it is difficult to manage when students are coming and going in and out of the classroom all day. Instructors are frequently interrupted when students need to leave or return to the classroom for various reasons.
Easy Lock Stop allows the instructor to keep the classroom door locked. The door opens and closes as designed. Easy Lock Stop keeps the door from latching, holding it open less than one-quarter of an inch. Viewing the door from the hallway, the door looks shut and secure, so it doesn’t attract attention. Easy Lock Stop fastens to the metal door frame and stays in place with the magnetic strips on the inside of the device.
In the event of a lock down, simply pull Easy Lock Stop off the door frame from inside the room. The door will quickly latch and securely lock. When not in use, Easy Lock Stop can be placed on the inside of the metal door frame out of the way.
Dr. Peters also points out in the 42 active shooter events examined, the shooter never successfully breached a locked internal door.
