After two straight weeks without a game, the Kindred Vikings managed to secure a win against the Central Cass Squirrels by a score of 22-20. The Vikings jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the second quarter, but the Squirrels were able to cut the deficit to 14-6 by halftime. Kindred appeared to pull away with 8 points in the third quarter, but the game came right down to the wire when Central Cass scored 14 unanswered points in the final quarter of play. The Squirrels had opportunities late in the game and marched down to the Vikings’ 25-yard line with just over a minute to go in the fourth quarter. But Kindred’s defense denied a series of passes to the endzone to secure their third consecutive win to begin the 2020 season.
Although his team could not come out with a win, Central Cass quarterback, Brendan Maasjo, earned the honor of being tonight’s CI Apparel Player of the Game. He had a lackluster first half but nearly led his team to a late-game double-digit comeback with multiple 20+ yard completions and a passing touchdown as well.
Kindred may not have had a game for the past two weeks, but they proved they were worthy of their ranking as the third-best team in Class AA. The Vikings were led by their own quarterback, Maxwell McQuillan, who had a pair of passing touchdowns and multiple big throws of his own.
This victory for Kindred elevates them to 3-0 this season, while Central Cass now sits at 3-2 overall. Kindred’s next contest will be at home against Wahpeton next Friday, October 9. Central Cass will also play at home next Friday against Hillsboro/Central Valley. Both games are set to kick off at 7:00 PM.
