In an effort to make more efficiencies at North Dakota’s Department of Transportation (NDDOT), some new drivers could get to skip the state’s road test when they go to get their drivers license.
Glenn Jackson, Motor Vehicle Director for NDDOT, explains that drivers ed instructors are now able to certify the driver is ready for the road.
In this podcast: Glenn Jackson joins Amy Iler & Cally Musland during It Takes 2.
This has been an idea in the works for a couple of years and Jackson says, “We’re working with them [the instructors] on certain criteria… and then we will do a random sampling of another road test, just to verify everything is going well.”
When the drivers ed student has completed the course they will get a certificate, one will certify they’re ready for the road and they will be able to skip the road test at the DMV and the other will encourage them to keep working on their driving skills.
Jackson says at this point it’s an “efficiency improvement” – spreading the work out and keeping wait times down, but notes it could turn into a cost-saving initiative for the department.
