The deviled egg has its roots all the way back to ancient Rome. Yep, you read that correctly! It’s no mistake that this delightfully devilish snack has had some identity changes over the years. Here are three recipes that are all incredibly easy, classy and a bit surprising.
CLASSIC DEVILED EGGS
Half dozen hard boiled eggs
1 teaspon Dijon mustard
3 dashes of Tobasco sauce (or more if you like the kick)
Salt/Pepper to taste
Minced chives
3 heaping tablespoons of mayonnaise
Smoked Paprika
Slice the eggs in half length wise, remove the yolks carefully.
Mash the yolks in a bowl, add the mustard, mayo and minced chives. Salt/Pepper/Tobasco to taste while mixing. Don’t go overboard and DO NOT EAT TOO MUCH! This mixture needs to fill a dozen egg halves!
Add mixture to a plastic bag, cut the corner of the bag and use hole to squeeze mixture into egg halves.
Dash some smoked paprika on to add some flavor and presentation.
Double the recipe – your guests will thank you later…
AVOCADO DEVILED EGGS
Same recipe as above, but instead of mayonnaise, use half of an avocado. Add a half tablespoon of lemon juice to the mixture to help preserve the color of the avocado. Feeling saucy? Add a quick hit of soy sauce to salt up this mixture.
JJ’S FAVORITE DEVILED EGGS A LA PRIME CUT MEATS
Here is the ultimate tip. I find that there is not enough mixture to really go around and do a nice heaping fill of the eggs. Sooooooo, take a dozen eggs. Make six of them in one of the styles above. Use all the yolks and really fill up those eggs.
Head over to Prime Cut Meats and buy a container of their pre-made Salmon Spread (probably the best I have ever had). Use the salmon spread to fill the remaining egg halves. Smoked salmon and deviled eggs?!?! You betcha. Savory and look great on a plate when mixed with other Deviled Egg styles.
AMY’S DEVILED EGG TIP!
When you want your deviled eggs to stand out at a gathering, do yourself some “flavor” and fry up some bacon. Nice and crispy, crumble the bacon bits onto your Deviled Eggs. You simply can’t go wrong with bacon!
