FROM KFGO NEWS:
FARGO (KFGO) – With another round of snow, you may want to take a look at your natural gas meter. Xcel Energy says a blocked or covered meter could create issues.
“Our equipment, most specifically those gas meters can end up underneath snow, there’s a regulator on it that needs an intake of air to properly maintain pressure so you’re furnace will run appropriately, so we would ask people to be aware of that, said Xcel Energy Fargo Area Manager Mark Nisbet.
“If possible to remove the snow with a shovel getting close to it and then by hand, it’s not a good idea to use a snowblower right around that gas meter, but that way you can prevent problems,” he added.
You should use your hands or a brush as you get close to the meter to prevent any damage, Nisbet said. At least a foot of clearance is recommended.
Furnace vent pipes can also become plugged with snow and ice, which may cause your furnace to run sporadically or shut down.
