The 2019 Grammy Awards were a night of breakthroughs. Rap music, often overlooked by the Grammys, had a massive night by “This is America” winning BOTH Song of the Year and Album of the Year. Female musician Cardi B. won best Rap album – she is the first female solo artist to take home the award.
Amazing tributes to Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin and a Motown tribute led by J. Lo. That last item has received some controversy as some have commented on the fact that Jennifer Lopez was not a suitable choice to be the lead performer during the tribute.
Other milestones of the night include an appearance by former First Lady Michelle Obama, a blunder on behalf of the producing team by cutting off Drake before he finishes (Steve Futterman has some insight into this) and an overwhelmingly positive reaction to Alicia Keys as the host.
